Sorry We’re Closed – Please don’t let this become the fate of more small businesses! Earlier this month we received an email from Gary and Sylvia of Alisellou Sewing Centre at Wooroolin. Qld. 4608. We wish to share a couple of statements made in that email as they resonate with s-e-w many of us who operate as a small concern: “…Big business is making it harder every day for businesses like ours...” “…Quite often people will say "wow how awesome to see a shop like yours still around" all the while they just walk out the door empty handed...” “…Just a small purchase from every one of our followers would make a huge difference!!!” All small businesses make many sacrifices and continue to work hard to keep the doors opened even as the dream and the light at the end of the tunnel – seems further away and grows dimmer every day. Please have a gander at some new products now available in Gary and Sylvia’s Embroidery store. https://www.95needlesembroidery.com.au/christmas-items/laser-engraved-decorations/ Plus go to https://www.ripleysewing.com.au/store and press on Santa to see what offers we have available until 24/12/23. Until next we chat stay safe and happy sewing from both Marie and I.

For those of us who can remember “Once upon a time” it was December when retail sales skyrocketed thanks to the Christmas and Boxing Day sales. Now however, it seems November has swiftly stolen the shopping limelight. Whilst the concept may have originated in the United States the Black Friday sales have now spread like wildfire around the world including here in Australia. It’s all due to the Black Friday (November 24) and Cyber Monday (November 27) sales that offer the kind of deals that get bargain hunters excited. In Australia, the term is somewhat controversial, as prior to its popularization as a shopping day, it referred not to shopping at all, but to the devastating Black Friday bushfires that occurred in Victoria 1938–39. From December 1938 to January 1939, fires burnt out around two million hectares. 71 people died and more than 650 buildings were destroyed. The most severe fires came during a firestorm on Friday January 13, known as Black Friday. S-E-W in the spirit of remembrance that we paused and reflected upon on Saturday (11/11) we also remember those affected by the many fires spread around Queensland commencing with the Darling Downs fires that began on 23 October 2023. Stay safe and keep sewing from Marie and I @ Ripley Sewing Centre.

A couple of weeks ago, as noted in an earlier chat, many of our participants in the RSC Quilt Challenge 2023 gathered gathered, presented their quilt top creation, shared their learning and challenges whilst enjoying a special High Tea to celebrate this conclusion of this chapter in their patchwork hobby journey. Unbeknown to them walking beside them on their journey was also an accomplished Queensland, Australian and International Quilt show winner. Today we forwarded their words of encouragement and reflections to each of our Quilt Challenge participants respectively. Again, we say congratulations to all and ask that you remember the following: Capability and individual expression are not qualities that just OTHER people possess. YOU have it too! As seen through participating in this challenge you let yours happen and realized there are no boundaries to your unique expression. In the words of song writers Coco Jones and Tyler James Williams “Let It Shine”. Stay safe and keep sewing from all the team at Ripley Sewing Centre.

Congratulations to all who, over the past 9 months, have participated in the Ripley Sewing Centre Quilt Challenge. On Saturday 21 St October our participants gathered, presented their quilt top creation, shared their learning and challenges whilst enjoying a special High Tea to celebrate this conclusion of this chapter in their patchwork hobby journey. Attached are photos of a selection of participants. They will absolutely amaze you especially when you think these results revolved around 9 words and pieces of fabric, they had not involvement in choosing. Well Done!!! Each participant received a gift which included some “Matilda’s Own” 100% Cotton Wadding , Special Bird Purse Scissors and a “Twirl “Charm Pack by Sarah Watts for Moda. We finished the morning with a presentation by Trish about her own quilting journey as she moves from using a domestic machine only to recently expanding to include her new longarm machine - HQ Amara ST. Trish’s presentation was both verbal and practical. Some participants accepted the challenge to have a go and did sew with great results. Fantastic time was had by all. Until next time we chat, keep sewing and stay safe, from Ripley Sewing Centre.

Simply Sewing on Saturdays
By John & Marie 14 Apr, 2023
Expressions of interest are invited from fellow sewing enthusiasts to join our 2023 Simply Sewing on Saturdays small group of like-minded people enthusiastic to share our patchwork and quilting journeys. We gather fortnightly from 9am to 12noon with a scrumptious morning tea enjoyed in between. You may like patchwork, applique, embroidery, or combining a range of techniques in your project; with perhaps the joy of one or more quilting styles to finish your creation. RSC will have patterns and kits available. Members can also bring a quality project of their own. In essence, the main aim is to create projects using quality materials in a supportive environment where sharing with others offers you the best in your patchwork and quilting journey. To express your interest please click on the "Get in touch" button above to tell us a little about yourself and what you would like to contribute. Note: Beginners (Male &/or Female) welcome to apply. Sewing Is an Ideal Creative Activity for Children
By John & Marie 10 Sep, 2021
At age 8-12, children have the mental capacity to learn the basic concepts and sufficient manual dexterity to operate a sewing machine. It’s actually the perfect age at which to learn. Sewing is an ideal creative activity for children. It develops their manual dexterity, hand/eye co-ordination, and encourages focus and concentration. Completing a sewing project from start to finish fosters a sense of accomplishment that can boost a child’s morale and self-confidence. And it’s really great fun! Plus, it gives them a huge sense of achievement and self-worth. Because they’re having such a great time, they don’t actually realise how many valuable sewing skills they are learning which will stay with them for life.

Point of Cutting up Fabric and Sewing
By John & Marie 03 May, 2023
Some years ago, June (Marie’s mum) stated she was puzzled and bemused with how Marie gained such enjoyment and pleasure from her patchwork and quilting activities. June, who herself was a wonderful seamstress, could not see the point of cutting up fabric into small pieces and then sewing it all back together. SEW: Are there health benefits to patchwork? Indeed, there is and following are but two of these:
Ode to the Sewing Machine
By John & Marie 24 Apr, 2023
Many of you would know people who have sewing machines sitting in their cupboard, some of them passed down or given as a gift and never used and some have been bought with good intentions. When asked why they don’t use them it usually comes down to one thing… “I don’t know HOW!” Rest assured that when you buy your machine from us, we show you “how”. We offer more than just a box …we help you become friends with your machine through a free 2-hour lesson and the opportunity to gather with others who enjoy this fulfilling craft. In 1947 Betty Hutton played Pearl in an incredibly cute and endearing musical film known as the Perils of Pauline. In the movie she sings an ode to her sewing machine of which the following is a snippit: “Ohhh the sewing machine, the sewing machine A girl’s best friend If I didn’t have my sewing machine I’d a come to no good end” https://www.threadsmagazine.com/2010/06/16/video-the-sewing-machine-serenaded-on-screen S-E-W which Pfaff or Singer machine will be your next best friend, your companion on late night binges, and your go-to when you’re craving something new to wear? Please phone / text us on 0419 948 452 , send us an email to Ripleysewing@gmail.com or simply PM us now. Until next we chat keep well and stay safe from all the team at Ripley Sewing.
Random Thoughts
By John & Marie 07 May, 2022
Have you ever found yourself gazing at the ceiling and apprehending something weird? Or looking outside the window and pondering about several known and unknown issues? These automatic and not so important thoughts that appear suddenly can literally blow your mind and make you question anything and everything. They are called random thoughts. Some give clarity; few render challenges while others are thought provoking. “Random Thoughts” is also a fabric range created by Marcia Derse, an established modern fibre artist and fabric designer for Windham Fabrics. She brings a completely new vocabulary of colour to the quilting world. The world is her palette as she draws her themes from the seasons or her travels or sometimes simply as a new texture found in her environment. She applies paint with abandon, exhausting the cups of colour, trying every combination. Each piece of fabric is a fresh and innovative arrangement of colour in a wonderful mix of small, medium and large prints. Random Thoughts quilt kit is an abstract kit using the Random Thoughts fabric collection and is suitable for a confident beginner. This is but one of the exciting activities that Ripley Sewing Centre has on offer for the second half of 2022.

sewers and quilters
By John & Marie 15 Jun, 2023
As sewers and quilters we have all the colours of the rainbow at our fingertips. For some it is a blessing but for a good percentage of us it is a challenge at the same time. Using colour is a bit about what you know and a heaps about what you love. It’s the old saying “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. Literally is means that the perception of Beauty is subjective – what one person likes or loves another may not. In this post we’ll explore two colour schemes for the same projects. In September 2018 Emily Dennis and Tuva Publishing released Modern Quilts Block by Block. This publication included 12 modern quilt projects which in this post we will be highlighting one of these patterns - Mini Medallion – and present it in two colourways. Mini Medallion is a geometric mini quilt or table topper using prints and accent fabrics. Completed project measures 24 inch by 24 inch thus allowing you to use a piece of 100% patchwork fabric as your backing. Quality patchwork fabric comes as 42inch WOF.
Pfaff, Singer & HandiQuilter Machine Servicing
By John & Marie 04 May, 2023
A well-made sewing machine—traditional or serger, new or old, used often or only occasionally—will sew perfectly for many years if it is given proper care. Here at Ripley Sewing Centre we service and repair only those brands of machines we sell. We have partnered with PFAFF® and SINGER® Sewing, Embroidery and Overlock machines, and HANDI QUILTER® long – arm quilting machines to provide you with the best experience to grow and enjoy your sewing journey. If you would like your machine serviced, please contact us via https://ripleysewing.com.au/contact/ or text / call our Ripley Sewing Centre Service contact number 0498 629 747 . Please note that this mobile is only monitored from 9am to 3pm on Mondays to Fridays and between 9am and 12noon on Saturdays. You may well ask: "Why do I need to service my machine?" Our machines are well made but like anything mechanical needs the proper care to have a long life. We suggest servicing your machine every 12months for optimal performance. Servicing your machine removes all the lint, dust and fluff that has built up in your machine, updates your machine with the latest software, and helps to identify and prevent problems that can cause damage. S-E-W until next we chat stay safe, keep well and happy sewing from all the team at Ripley Sewing.
Long Arm Quilting
By John & Marie 14 Apr, 2022
Quilting: Stitching through all three layers of the quilt (the quilt top, the batting, and the quilt back), typically in decorative patterns, which serves three purposes: To secure the layers to each other, To add to the beauty and design of the finished quilt, and To trap air within the quilted sections, making the quilt as a whole much warmer than its parts. Long Arm quilting involves placing the layers to be quilted on a special frame. The frame has bars on which the layers are rolled, keeping these together without the need for using a spray adhesive or pinning. These frames are used with a professional long arm quilting machine mounted on a platform. The platform rides along tracks so that the machine can be moved across the layers on the frame. A long arm machine on a frame is moved across the fabric. In contrast, the fabric is moved through a home sewing machine or sit down long arm machine. We use the HandiQuilter “Amara” ( https://handiquilter.com.au/product/hq-amara/ ) for both our free motion and computerised quilting. Edge-to-edge (E2E): E2E is where a design is placed over the whole surface of the quilt, irrespective of the pattern used to create the quilt top. This produces a beautiful quilted appearance while being cost effective. Primarily we prefer to use quilting patterns created by Anne Bright with over 300 of her designs in our E2E Library. Custom quilting: Custom quilting is where different quilting patterns are used in different sections of the quilt top depending on the piecing design. Custom quilting is very labour intensive, costly and quilters will often limit the number and type of custom projects undertaken. You may have heard the phrase “every quilt tells a story,” but let’s face it—some quilts seem like they come from a horror novel. There are occasions when patchworkers decide “done” is better than “perfect”. At this point two of the most common challenges that raise their head are wavy borders that are too full for the quilt itself and that dastardly villain known as the “open seam.” Ethical quilters will reserve the right to advise that they are unable to complete a project if any/all of the quilt parts i.e., top, batting & backing are of a standard that would be prohibitive of a quality outcome. They will also offer advice and encouragement in ways to rectify any challenges presented s-e-w that together your work will become your masterpiece.
