Cornerstones are squares of fabric pieced within sashing or border strips that usually align in the block corners or outside corners in the case of the border. Sometimes, mind you, cornerstones are used simply because there just wasn't enough fabric for the sashing.
Participants involved in our beginner patchwork quilt program have followed the instructions on Page 46 of Sarah’s book “Jump into Patchwork”. These instructions are:
1. Arrange the blocks into 3 rows of 3 and sew
21/2˝ × 121/2˝ white sashing strips between the blocks
in each row. Press.
2. Create a cornerstone sashing strip by sewing
together 3 white 121/2˝ strips and 2 blue C 21/2˝ squares,
alternating. Make 2.
3. Sew the cornerstone sashing strips between the rows.
Jodie used her cornerstones to add both colour and visual interest to her quilt top. The white sashing strips used are “Rainbow” from the Blossom range by Christopher Thompson for Riley Blake Designs. The dark blue cornerstones are from the Shadow Play range by Maywood Studio.
Something worth remembering is not to rush through the cutting of your pieces or they will not come out straight and will mess up your quilt's symmetry.
